Ultimately our physical practice - the twisting, the trembling, the sweat 💦 - leads us here… to a place of quiet and stillness. . . When I started my asana practice so many years ago, it was to withdraw from the stress and busyness of life. It was a selfish escape. . . But slowly the avoidance of the world transformed into a deepening of reality - through quiet and stillness I’ve come to see and know myself more; I’ve come to see both the darkness and the light in the 🌎 with sharper clarity; I’ve come to see the role and responsibility I bear in bringing greater balance to the inequality that surrounds us. . . While yoga is largely a solitary endeavor, ultimately, I believe, the inward journey leads us to a place where we connect with one another. We are winding down #FromMyMatToYours and for ✨DAY 9✨ @sandragon21 leads us through PIGEON POSE! . . One of my faaaaaaav asanas 😍 - I love the feeling of pigeon and all the variations! It didn’t start as Love, starting out with super tight hips... but it’s turned into a full blown love affair! . . My current fav is moving and twisting in my pigeon, slooooowly crawling my hands in a semicircle from knee to foot until I’m in a twist with elbow to arch of front foot and hands in prayer 🙏 ... using strength and pressing through the fingers as I crawl, deepening the stretch and grounding of the hips ... feels so so good ❤️ . . 💥 BUT - ha ha the lawyer in me has to give a warning! Don’t try this variation unless your front leg is comfortably at 90 - so quite an open hip - with strong flex in foot. If your foot isn’t at 90, bring 👣 foot to a “floint” to engage the leg and protect the knee and work your hip opening before getting fancy. And feel free to take thread-the-needle on the back 👉 a super great choice with all the benefits and much less risk of straining the knee! . . I’m so sad 😞 we are almost done this challenge! Let the ✨magic✨ sink in ... the work is done. Let the body release ... find stillness. 🕊 Let the mind expand and be free ... empty. . . Ahhhh. After a tough week of #FromMyMatToYours we take a pause 🙏 as the sweetest of souls @carreyia leads us into SAVASANA for DAY 8. . . If you’re like me, a never ending to-do list and go-getter, savasana may be a struggle at first. Finding stillness and rest may be the hardest part of our practice. A technique I find helpful when I’m having difficulty settling down is counting and feeling my breath. . . 🦋 One hand on belly, one to heart - slooooow, long 3-part breath. On the inhale, feeling the hand on the belly gently rise, the breath rolling through and expanding the ribs, inflating the chest, and exhaling - reverse - chest, ribs, belly. 5 to 10 counts is usually enough to clear the mind and let my body release. . . After practicing regularly with @jonathanphair for about a year we were chatting and he said - the biggest change he’s seen in my practice is in my savasana. I was a bit surprised 😯 at first because during that time I had hit splits, compass, EPK1, tripod to crow and crow to tripod ... so ... 🤷🏻‍♀️ really ... savasana? . . But what an incredible compliment! 💙 I am always setting goals, go-go-go in every day life ... my yoga is the ultimate gift of slowing down and tuning in. One time where I get to do everything just for me. . . UPAVISTHA KONASANA - don’t blame me 😆 .. this is @da_via_yoga’s pick for 💙DAY 7💙 of #FromMyMatToYours ... ouch - such a toughie for me! . . My history with this pose is fairly short and sweet (like me? 😜). I never really practiced it until starting primary series 5 months ago during YTT. . . I wish I had a “before” shot 📷 of what this looked like 5 months ago - completely different and very upright. I couldn’t reach my toes and as soon as I’d try to lower my back would round. . . I practice full primary in a mysore setting once a week (PS - if you’re in Toronto I highly suggest @downwarddogyoga 🙌 the mysore is non-dogmatic, very welcoming and incredibly helpful with lots of one-on-one instruction and assists). . . So this pose teaches me how quickly the body can adapt to new things! 🙏 Even practicing it just once a week has made an unbelievable difference! . . For those taking an active version - remember to keep your feet 👣 alive with a flex/floint. Check out your toes and kneecaps - you want them pointing ☝️ up so your legs aren’t falling in or out, especially as you try to lower. And if the back starts rounding 🚫 - come back up to long spine and stay. No need to take the legs super wide, hook the toes, or get chest to floor .. that’s never the goal 😉. . . 🌟🌟 POSSIBILITY 🌟🌟 One of the greatest gifts yoga has given me. . . For DAY 6 of #FromMyMatToYours @valdasaur chose PINCHA MAYURASANA 😍 - make sure you check out her stories (and @da_via_yoga’s too) as they share their history of pincha! . . I’ve admired pincha from afar 😍 for a looong time. There was always doubt that I could ever achieve such a state of balance and beauty, so I never gave myself permission to try. . . I need to stop saying IMPOSSIBLE when it comes to yoga. Arm balances in particular always remind me of this lesson. . . For all of 2018, I’m committed to practicing pincha at least twice a week, with ZERO judgment, goal or expectation 🙏. (💙 big hugs to all the #PinchaParty2018 peeps!) A promise to myself and my mat that I will TRY. If pincha comes, wonderful! If it doesn’t, equally wonderful. . . 2 months into my pincha commitment, I can already see and feel a huge shift. Wow already at the mid point of #FromMyMatToYours and I am your lucky lead host for 🌟DAY 5🌟 and I choose LIZARD POSE! . . In my pre-yoga life all I did was run. Hours at a time, step step step… over and over and over again. I didn’t stretch (waste of time!) and my diet consisted of cereal, bagels, pasta, pie, Peak Freans, licorice and ice cream (student budget diet!). 😳 Ugh - the poor things I put my body through in my 20s! . . The first time I went for a massage, in my early 20s - the masseuse said I was SO TIGHT and warned - if I didn’t start stretching, I wouldn’t be able to bend over by the time I’m 40! . . When I first started yoga, lizard pose was horror on my runner’s hips. Teacher would cue option to go to forearms and my eyes would bug out 😱, wondering HOW is that humanly possible?!? . . 🦎 But before EVERY class, I would go early and lizard. And sure enough, after several long and slow years, my hips began to open up. Burning 🔥 and inner screams 😫 turned into love 💕 and patience. . . 8 years ago, if you told me one day my forehead will touch the floor in lizard I would have laughed in your face 😂 and said, “no way”! . . Hope you like it! . . To start, some 🐬 dolphin to chaturangas. I looove these… such a sweet burn, I love the fluidity of the transition! I stole them from the incredible (😍 mega girl crush!) … and then just some play time on the mat, thinking about how chaturanga comes up time and time again in so many other asanas - EPK, tripod headstand are a couple I threw in, but there are endless! . . ✨✨ Judgment and comparison ✨✨ . . The hardest part of wheel pose for me is letting go of the self-judgment. 🙏 My urdva dhanurasana will never be on the cover of a magazine 😆 .. wheel pose draws attention to so many of my trouble spots - tight hip flexors, tight shoulders, tight spine. . . I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I felt a bit like a “bad yogi” for YEARS 😢 because my spine isn’t flexy. I’d compare myself to pictures and videos of people who have only been practicing for a year or two and can drop back and grab their ankles - and get frustrated. . . Practice and all is coming - my a$$ 🙄 (I’d think to myself)! . . But 2 things really changed my heart when it comes to backbends: . 1️⃣ I committed to practicing natarajasana (dancers pose) at least twice a week for a year - instead of complaining about backbends, I committed to practicing them without judgment. During the process, I finally learned how to let go of the goal and truly enjoy practice simply for the beauty of practice. . . 2️⃣ YTT and learning more about anatomy and seeing how different vertebrae structure can be, and how it can impact natural flexibility. For some of us, our bone structure may limit the depth of our pose - yes with practice we will all open up and get deeper - maybe one day I’ll even drop back. But I’m pretty sure I will never grab my ankles in wheel! And that doesn’t mean I have to practice it more, it doesn’t mean I’m a bad yogi.. it simply IS what it is. . .
