Wild animals and remote locations excite me

Spending time in Santiago Chile is a shocking contrast to the wilderness of Antartica, but being woken up by the call of a peregrine falcon is still exciting and a nice surprise. Peregrines were once facing a very bleak future due to the catastrophic effects of DDT, but strong conservation efforts have allowed their numbers to bounce back and they can now be found in most cities. Tall buildings and countless pigeons serve these birds well. . #santiagodechile #peregrinefalcon #highrise

The shuffling of bags and fogginess in my head must mean it's time to head back to Antarctica. It's a place unlike no other in it's remoteness and also how damn long it takes to actually get there. One more day before we return to the wilderness. . #travel

Tomorrow I begin another journey to Antarctica and the last true wilderness on Earth. Every time I leave California it's like saying a guilt-free goodbye to a life partner who has shaped me into the person I have become. I did not grow up with wilderness or beauty in my backyard so I do not take it for granted now. I will always be excited to travel to remote and wild places but that excitement will always be balanced by the anticipation of returning home. . #california #bigsur #home

Shark photography is about capturing the beauty of these creatures rather than trying to get the most impressive, scary, or crazy shot. Close up pictures of sharks with open mouths and nasty teeth showing are counter productive to the message because it injects too much of the photographer into the image and stirs that primal fear inside all of us. Instantly the viewer wonders ‘how did you get this?’ ‘were you scared?’ etc instead of marveling at the animal itself. Millions of sharks are being killed each year so it’s time for underwater photographers everywhere to strive for more beauty and less fear. None of us are really that brave underwater anyways. . #shark

Antarctic killer whales are the only large animals known to migrate just for the purpose of maintenance. In this case, it appears to be the health of their skin that keeps these big dolphins from spending their whole lives down in the freezing waters of Antarctica where they do most of their feeding. Every few weeks these killer whales have to swim thousands of miles to warmer waters above the Antarctic Convergence to kill off any algae growing on their skin. The brown coloration seen in the second photo is due to diatoms (algae) growing on the killer whales’ skin, which means this duo has been amongst the ice for some time. The first photo shows killer whales with clean skin, meaning they have recently returned from a trip to the northern regions, i.e. they recently had a spa day. @sea_legacy @eyosexpeditions . #antarctica #treatyoself #killerwhale

Illustration is an important part of my life that I often forget about. If it wasn't for illustration my life would have been very different and probably much less interesting than it is today. As a young marine biologist trying to find my way in a complicated education system, Illustration afforded me a unique avenue to combine creativity and science to educate as many people as possible. All of these animals are players in several figures I created for a college textbook but I've compiled them all into a giant poster for my buddy @kpfree to adorn his home. . #science #illustration

Adelie penguins are so concerned about being ambushed by a leopard seal that they are willing to launch themselves out of the water at full speed right into the rocks to increase their chances of survival. That’s pretty hardcore if you ask me. . #antarctica with @eyosexpeditions #penguin #adelie #turningthetide

A big male leopard seal gives me the stink eye with the Lemaire Channel serving as the backdrop. Leopard seals get a bad wrap as mindless killing machines, but I find them to be incredibly intelligent, curious at times and shy at others. They are one of the most interesting animals of the Antarctic and always worth observing. Go back to sleep big guy and get those penguins! . With @eyosexpeditions #antarctica #expedition

Despite what you may think, penguins are vicious killing machines. They have recurved barbs on the roof of their mouth and a temper like a junk yard dog when it comes to defending their turf. Penguins are at their most interesting when they are unadulterated and raw. Watching them defend their nests on Magdalena Island was one of my favorite memories from this brief Chilean sojourn and a nice break from the din of a typical Gentoo penguin colony we experience most of the season. . #chile #patagonia #penguin

I’ve lived in big cat country my whole life (California) but had never seen one until just the other day. It was 5am, no one else was on the trail when the guanacos started to scream their warning call. I had never heard this call, but spent enough time around guanacos to know that they were warning each other about a puma. There she was sitting with a fresh kill which she proceeded to consume over the next few minutes as I sat there quietly watching. Guanacos still sounding the alarm. She eventually stood up, stretched, and walked towards me without hesitation. As she proceeded up the hill towards me I started to regret hiking alone. At that point there was nothing I could do but stand up slowly and back away. She kept coming closer but did not have the body language of a predator stalking prey. Everything was happening on her terms so I stayed calm and just took in the moment. It was exhilarating and one of the most exciting wildlife encounters of the past few years. . #puma

Guanacos are all over the Patagonian steppe and a great source of distraction and enjoyment while hiking. As grazers of vast areas, these camelids are an important part of the ecosystem and are prey for predators and scavengers from pumas to condors. The chulengos (babies) are also adorable. . #chile #torresdelpaine #guanaco #patagonia

Over the past few years I have spent more and more time in southern Chile and have steadily grown to love it. From diving in the fjords of Seno Almantazco to wildlife watching in Torres del Paine, this wind-swept land is creeping up as one of my favorite spots to explore and get away from the distractions of modern life. It also happens to be a beautiful place brimming with wildlife which I will share over the next few days. Keep an eye on my Stories for more shots from Patagonia. . #chile @sony #patagonia

Adelie penguins are one of the most entertaining residents on the Antarctic Peninsula. Don't let their small size and monochromatic pallette fool you, they are easily the most expressive of the penguins. Unfortunately their numbers are taking a hit in this part of Antarctica and it's likely due to changes in sea ice duration and extent as they are true ice penguins and their fate is intimately linked to that of sea ice. . Antarctica has never truly been settled by humans which makes it a place like no other. Since modern humans left East Africa our ancestors have radiated to every continent and island group except those frozen lands whose very existence were questioned until just a few hundred years ago. Until those first adventurous sealers ventured past the last known lands, Antarctica had been spared the heavy hand of human existence. Surrounded by an endless ocean, violent storms, and relentless seas, Antarctica was cloaked in a veil of secrecy and immune to human impact. Those were simpler times. . #antarctica | @eyosexpeditions | #eyosexpeditions | #turningthetide

Humpback whales make long migrations from their tropical socializing grounds to feast in the ultra-productive waters of Antarctica. With only one week to go, I've entered full prep mode for the upcoming Antarctic season with EYOS Expeditions. It's going to be an exciting season with new folks to inspire and a whole bunch of new tools to capture the essence of this magical place. A big part of my time is spent managing last year's photos, thinking of new shots, and learning from my mistakes. This photo of Type A killer whales during a heavy snowfall was one of my favorite from last year and a benchmark for me to improve upon. . #antarctica #killerwhale #ecotype @eyosexpeditions
