@Regranned from @sea_legacy - Photo by @DaisyGilardini // I captured this image of a gentoo penguin colony in a snowstorm on Pleneau Island in the  Antarctic Peninsula in November, 2015. I was feverish that morning with flu, and so didn't go out on the ship's first landing of the day. I chose instead to stay in bed and ride out the bug. I couldn't get any rest, though. I tossed and turned,  knowing I was missing out on a great  storm. Finally, I decided to go out in the afternoon, no matter what. Once on dry land, I hardly made it up the hill, I was huffing and coughing so much. Reaching the top of the hill, I started working a couple of penguins, who were courting. The wind picked up and a strong gust almost knocked me over. At this point, I realized it wasn't really that wise to be out there, considering my cold. I thought it would be wiser to return to the warmth of my bunk in the ship. I started packing up my gear and, when I turned around to descend the hill, this is what appeared before me. In a blink of an eye, I forgot about the fever, forgot about the cold, forgot about the discomfort. It was one of my most memorable shots of the entire expedition, and I was the last one to leave the site to go back to the ship. Perseverance always pays off. That image made into National Geographic, the February, 2017 issue, in the “Vision of Earth” section. #TurningTheTide #Antarctica #penguins #climate_change - #regrann

@Regranned from @paulnicklen - There is nothing I’d love more for Christmas than to know polar bears are healthy, happy and protected. As the apex predator in the Arctic, and an animal I grew up in close proximity to on Baffin Island, these bears represent the general health of an ecosystem. For this to happen, we need to create marine protected areas in the Arctic (like the recently created Tallurutiup Imanga / Lancaster Sound), and we need to combat climate change. @Sea_Legacy is working hard build constituencies that demand that world governments cut carbon emissions and create marine protected areas. If you’d like to help convince these government entities to protect bears of all kinds, please consider giving the gift of a membership to The Tide and letting your loved one help in #TurningTheTide for our bears. This is so heartbreaking and all our fault. Open your eyes and stop destroying our planet. We’re killing not only ourselves but our home and these precious babies. It’s time to stop being selfish. #Repost @paulnicklen ・・・ My entire @Sea_Legacy team was pushing through their tears and emotions while documenting this dying polar bear. It’s a soul-crushing scene that still haunts me, but I know we need to share both the beautiful and the heartbreaking if we are going to break down the walls of apathy. This is what starvation looks like. The muscles atrophy. No energy. It’s a slow, painful death. When scientists say polar bears will be extinct in the next 100 years, I think of the global population of 25,000 bears dying in this manner. There is no band aid solution. There was no saving this individual bear. People think that we can put platforms in the ocean or we can feed the odd starving bear. The simple truth is this—if the Earth continues to warm, we will lose bears and entire polar ecosystems. This large male bear was not old, and he certainly died within hours or days of this moment. But there are solutions. We must reduce our carbon footprint, eat the right food, stop cutting down our forests, and begin putting the Earth—our home—first. Video by @PaulNicklen // Earlier this week, we shared a heartbreaking video of a starving polar bear. It was hard to watch, and sad to endure, but it provides an important perspective into the future for polar bears. Unless we curb carbon emissions and pursue solutions to achieve drawdown, this is the grim fate for many species. The good news is that a wide array of both proven and promising new solutions already exist. Reforesting the oceans and restarting natural nutrient cycles can drawdown carbon, deacidify and cool surface waters, at the same time as producing sustainable food and biofuel. @Sea_Legacy went to the Canadian Arctic to document the effects of climate change. We found them. We also found healthy, beautiful bears, like this. Follow me at @paulnicklen. @sea_legacy #turningthetide

There's drastic population decline of polar bears How does climate change affect polar bears so dramatically? Polar bears rely on sea ice to access their primary source of food as well as to rest and breed. With less sea ice every year, polar bears and many other ice-dependent creatures are at risk. As the world warms and the ice melts polar bears will be a casualty of industry, production, and pollution. This polar bear could not be saved, It's not the first and it won't be the last polar bear to suffer this fate. ...stole my look 👀😛 #Repost @sea_legacy ・・・ Photo by @daisygilardini // The Kermode bear is one of the rarest bears in the world. Due to a unique recessive gene, this subspecies of the American Black bear has white or cream-coloured fur. Just 400 to 1,000 individuals are believed to remain, in a 400-kilometre-long corridor of rainforest along Canada’s west coast: the Great Bear Rainforest. This unique ecosystem where everything is interdependent needs protection. Salmon are the natural link which connects the forest to the ocean, through their cyclical spawning seasons. Bears will catch a fish and then drag it into the forest to eat. Birds and other mammals feed on the remains, while marine nutrients, along with the bear’s droppings, help fertilize the forest soil. As conservation photographers it is our duty to capture the beauty of places and species at risk, and raise awareness through the universal power of the images we capture. #TurningTheTide #SpiritBear #GreatBearRainforest #Canada

It's time to get back in the water with these oversized pinniped puppies again. Historically humans have been known to shoot sea lions, seen as a threat to good fishing. The only way these graceful, strong, and curious animals should be shot is with a camera. Follow @sea_legacy and see some of the ways we can ensure there is enough food to go around, for us, for the sea lions, and for all others that call this place home.

Recently, the video of a starving polar bear made it to almost every media outlet. Millions of people saw it and the responses were immense. Unfortunately, often we live by the "out of sight, out of mind" principle. This can make it hard to see climate change and it's impact on our planet in daily life. It also shows how important the work of people like @cristinamittermeier and @paulnicklen is. They are out in nature almost every single day, documenting how beautiful and vulnerable our planet is. When seeing the problems, it will be easier to solve them. I took this photo of a relatively small glacier on Franz Josef Land during the North Pole Climate Change Summit and it reminds me of my wonderful time in the arctic and to care about the planet every single day. • #TurningTheTide with @sea_legacy#climatechange #love #arctic #sea #ice #globalwarming #glacier #conservation #science #beautiful #planet #earth #nature #earthcapture #lovetheworld #YourShotPhotographer #neuehorizonte #wanderlust #expedition

#Repost @sea_legacy (@get_repost) ・・・ Photo by @DaisyGilardini // I captured this image of a gentoo penguin colony in a snowstorm on Pleneau Island in the  Antarctic Peninsula in November, 2015. #TurningTheTide #Antarctica #penguins #climate_change

A little food for thought when consuming your next meal containing fish. Before you buy any fish, do your homework, read labels carefully and whether it be in a store or at a restaurant – ask where and how its sourced. 🍣🥢 • • • *”🚫Warning🚫: graphic and disturbing content. This issue affects all of us so please read. In 2001, I photographed my first major assignment for @natgeo on the fish farming industry. Two years and five countries later, I was horrified by this industry. Atlantic salmon farming is destructive to ecosystems, and especially wild fish stocks. Doctors warn that eating farmed fish can be destructive to our health, especially for pregnant women. I was proud when the resulting story won first place at the World Press Photo Awards for journalistic storytelling. At the time, our story told how it took four pounds of wild anchovies to make a pound of farmed salmon, causing the collapse of foundation fish stocks in some waters. This industry uses more antibiotics and pesticides than any other livestock industry on Earth. Fish farms cause sea lice infestations that are collapsing some wild trout and salmon stocks wherever these farms exist. We even reported on how the industry uses a chemical colorant in their feed to give fish flesh—which is otherwise pale—a bright orange color. Things have only became worse—a lot worse. As reported by the BC provincial veterinarian in charge, 80% of the BC salmon farming industry is infected with Piscine reovirus, which is a highly contagious blood virus that causes heart disease in salmon. An infected salmon farm can shed up to 60 billion infectious virus particles per hour...let that soak in. Wild salmon are not built to survive this and many may die before being able to complete their epic journey upstream to spawn.” • **”The salmon (Pictured above)—which is legally labelled “organic”—ends up on the plates of people who want cheap salmon: customers at high-volume retailers like Costco and Walmart, all-you-can-eat sushi restaurants, etc. 40% of it ends up in Los Angeles, California.” • • 🔁 from *@paulnicklen & **@sea_legacy 📸 by John and Jane Doe. 🎥 from BC Broughton Archipelago, footage by John & Jane Doe

@Regranned from @paulnicklen - My entire @Sea_Legacy team was pushing through their tears and emotions while documenting this dying polar bear. Please join us at @sea_legacy as we search for and implement solutions for the oceans and the animals that rely on them—including us humans. #Repost @natgeo (@get_repost) ・・・ Video by @PaulNicklen // Earlier this week, we shared a heartbreaking video of a starving polar bear.

@daisygilardini - The Kermode bear is one of the rarest bears in the world. As conservation photographers it is our duty to capture the beauty of places and species at risk, and raise awareness trough the universal power of the images we capture. #TurningTheTide #SpiritBear #GreatBearRainforest #Canada #britishcolumbia #natgeo #natgeowild #imagesofcanada #bear #spiritbear #kermodebear #kermode #wildlife #wild #wildanimals #wildlifeplanet #wildlifeaddicts #wildlifecentral #travelcanada #explorecanada #explorebritishcolumbia #parkscanada #canada #canadiancreatives #canadawildlife #wildlifephotography #wildgeography #wildlifeplanet #nikon #lowepro #nikoncanada

To stick with my theme I wanted to post a selfie. But this is far more important than a theme. I couldn’t help but weep as I watched it. Heartbreaking how much we’ve damaged our planet. Sharing this isn’t enough but it will help and I will continue to donate to animal causes despite my student income.
