Malika is 28 years old. Just 14 when she was married off by her family, she lives with her five children in a small room in the Wazir Abad neighborhood in Kabul, Afghanistan. Malika is a single mother and supports her family on a monthly income of 800 afs ($12) from washing clothes. Photographer @kianahayeri, a TED Fellow based in Iran, was the same age as Malika when she spent one month last summer photographing the rarely seen daily lives of around 30 single mothers in Kabul. Guilt and betrayal, brothers and brides, exploding cars and mine shafts. The upcoming feature film from @blitzambassador – The Burial of Kojo – seems to have it all. But what the film didn’t have was a Hollywood budget or seasoned cast or crew. Shot entirely in his home country of Ghana on a micro-budget with local crew and many first-time actors, the film is, by Blitz’s estimation, the “first non-foreign film of this magnitude and scale to be produced in Ghana.” Go to fellowsblog.ted.com to learn more about the project and to support the film on Kickstarter.

What can self-portraits convey that selfies cannot? And why do they continue to compel both artists and viewers alike? Russian artist Uldus Bakhtiozina explores questions like these, producing surreal images of herself that examine modern womanhood, her cultural heritage and her evolving identity as a creative person. See more of her work at ideas.ted.com and watch her talk at go.ted.com/uldusbakhtiozina.

Jennifer Brea was a Ph.D. student at Harvard about to marry the love of her life when suddenly her body started to fail her. She has Myalgic Encephalopathy (commonly known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), a mysterious illness the medical establishment still knows little about. Hoping to shed light on the disease, Brea, a TED Fellow, picked up a camera to capture the darkest moments of her own struggle with M.E., and to connect with the global M.E. community trapped in their bedrooms by the disease. Her new documentary, @unrestfilm, is a remarkable portrait of resilience, shining a light on M.E. and challenging the stigma around an illness that affects millions of people around the world.

Meet Su Kahumbu, the Kenyan agriculturalist helping farmers keep their herds healthy. For many farmers across Africa, reliable information is incredibly difficult to find. They often lack access to veterinarians, details on immunization schedules, updates on local climate conditions, and more. In 2011 Su launched iCow, a mobile application that directly supports farmers caring for livestock by offering them easy access to relevant information and connecting them with other agricultural players. In Beirut’s most iconic war-torn building, Beit Beirut, this exhibition by Zena el Khalil aims to transform Beirut into a “city of light.” The exhibition, Sacred Catastrophe: Healing Lebanon, is located on what was called the Green Line, which marked the abundant green space between the Christian and Muslim militias uninhabited due to militia crossfire. "I believe in the positive impact that art can have on the world. From Beirut I invite you to join me in sending positive vibes to the entire globe," says Zena.
